The Truth About Naked

Who doesn't love a good neutral eye? Who doesn't crave for that perfect neutral pallet that can become your go to? I sure do! As the years have progressed and I've gotten older, I seem to be always reach for my neutral colours and luckily for me I have all three of Urban Decay's naked pallets. I remember all the hype when the original Naked was released, that damn thing was sold out EVERYWHERE. I even went on a waiting list to purchase it when it came back. And of course I loved the thing but then Urban Decay unveiled that surprise surprise they were going to come out with a Naked 2. And of course everyone rushed out to buy the new "cool toned" Naked, myself included. And then they followed the rose gold hype that everyone was on and came out with their Naked 3. Don't get me wrong, there are some real winners in these three pallets. Do I need all three? Definitely not. My hand always reaches for one out of the three and its not like its more accessible, they all sit in the same spot in my vanity.

So lets look a little closer and see which one you should actually spend your money on. All swatches are done without a primer and are taken outdoors in natural light.

Urban Decay describes their first pallet as "packed with twelve gorgeous bronze-hued neutrals". The pallet that they are currently selling comes with the dual fibre brush that all the pallets now carry. When I first picked it up it featured the eyeliner duo, which I used to the very end. Can we just look at this beautiful packaging for a second? By far the best packaging out of the three. Lightweight and the magnetic closure is very secure. The slim and compact packaging always makes this a great package to travel.

L to R: Virgin, Sin, Naked, Sidecar, Buck, Half Baked, Smog, Darkhorse, Toasted, Hustle, Creep, Gunmetal

You can probably see from this photo the love that I have for this palette. I'm almost to pan for a few shades and I don't think there is a better compliment than that. Naked and Buck are my favourite go to shadows for a nice smokey eye; Naked being the transition colour and Buck in the crease. Smog and Sidecar are both great colours with shimmer in them but be careful when using these because they both have fall out due to the glitter. Half Baked is great and bright perfect for a summer gold look, it can stand on it's own without a base.

Sadly, I could really do without Creep and Gunmetal. Though they both are very pigmented I find them very hard to work with. Gunmetal causes so much fall out that you better do you eyes before your foundation or your going to instantly regret it. They both also have a green tint to them and I hate that about some grey eyeshadows.

Overall, Naked is my go-to palette, everyday. If you see me with some neutral eye it 9/10 times the original Naked.

The long waited Naked 2 is described as "12 rich-pigmented taupe and greige neutral eyeshadows.". First of all, what is greige? Anyways, the first time featuring their dual ended eyeshadow brush, what a shame. I definitely do not enjoy this brush. I feel like the metallic in some of the shades is not picked up by this brush at all and even the pigmented shadows are softened and almost eliminated when this brush is used. I think the only time I ever used this brush is when I am too lazy to wash my other ones. And with the Naked 2 came this new packaging, the plastic feels cheap and the way it just snaps close sounds cheap and easily breakable. Definite downgrade. The only good feature is the full mirror on the top.

L to R: Foxy, Half Baked, Bootycall, Chopped, Tease, Snakebite, Suspect, Pistol, Verve, Yok, Busted, Blackout

When I look at Naked and Naked 2, do I see a difference? Not really. They even repeated Half Baked. Don't get me wrong, they are all really beautiful colours but when working with these colours, they all blend together and kinda just look like one. The colours don't stand on their own and Foxy is a disappointment (You can see in the photo it hardly shows up). It is nice if you are working with all shimmer shadows and want a matte highlight but this just isn't a shade I would grab for.

"Never before seen rose-hued eyeshadows" is what they promised of Naked 3, and I think they definitely delivered. I have to say I am let down by name packaging. They added a twist to it with some sort of rippling effect, which I think makes it look worse. I wish they changed that up but oh well, I would assume that this plastic is a cheaper form of production, allowing them to make more in a smaller time frame. Again, the same brush but this one of the blending side is more tapered and thinner than the precise one.

L to R: Strange, Dust, Burnout, Limit, Buzz, Trick, Nooner, Liar, Factory, Mugshot, Darkside, Blackheart

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! I am a sucker for pinks and shimmer and I think these can be done beautifully. There isn't really a let down in this whole palette, all of them shining and standing out their own. Dust, Buzz, and Factory are my three favourites out of the twelve. But the major fall down in this is the fall out that almost all of these have. Buzz is beautiful but needs to be packed down on the lid other than swiped, with a strong base because if not you will have a huge mess. Limit and Nooner are great crease/transition colours. The last four are fabulous out corner shadows, especially Blackheart, a very dark brown with purple shimmer.

My last impressions, for $64CAD each for these bad boys, you can definitely pick and choose here. If I had to pick, I'd loose 2 and keep 1 and 3. Had I known what I know about Naked 2 now, I would be $64 richer. If you are starting out in makeup or your not as confident in applying it, Naked 1 is the way to go. You can blend the shadows so easily that you can never go wrong here. It is a great way to start building your collection and giving it a foundation. That being said, I don't think Naked 3 is worth a pass. It is so beautiful but if I had to pick an ultimate winner, Naked 1 wins.

Do you have any of the Nakeds? Which one is your favourite and which would you let go of?
